1. What problems or conflicts are presented in chapter one? Tao needing to find a rabbit is an obvious one; identify at least two more.
2. Predict the resolution of each conflict

Chapter 2
What two important events happen in this chapter

One problem is that Volt is angry at Tao. Also Tao's clan is starving to death.
I think that Tao has to get the rabbit back to make Volt a little bit happier.
When the summer comes the animals come out of their hiding places to drink water.
This gives the hunters a chance to kill the animals for food.

In chapter 2 Tao is going to sleep when a wolf with a bone stuck in its mouth. Tao knew it was starving because the wolf
had its ribs showing. Tao reached for the bone and took it out slowly. The wolf moved a lot but Tao still got it out.
The wolf walked into the night . Tao had told the wolf to go but now he was alone.

Another event that happened was when Tao went into a part of the forest that was forrbiden. then he heard something howl and
he thinks it's an evil spirt.
3
I am Volt leader of a clan. Some people may say I am stubborn , but I am not. I only am angry because my clan is starving. I rely on the hunters to bring food. They all do , but there is one boy that I don't like very much . His name is Tao. He doesn't hunt like I tell him to do. I was especially angry when he didn't bring back the rabbit that he caught . I sent him back out to the plains to find the rabbit . Tao brought 3 rabbits and grubs. I took the food . I was still furious that he didn't bring back the rabbit , so I sent Tao away. I don't like Tao and he's going to have to do better if he wants to survive. 1 Tao and Ram both learn how to hunt. 2 Tao decides to hunt on his own.

Chapter8

There is an old farmer that wants his son to inheriate his farm and be a farmer like him.The only problem is the son has a dream that he would live in the city and be educated. The father says that school is nonesense. The son sneaks out of the house to follow his dream. My opinion is that he should of listened to his father because it would of hurt his father.

Chapter 9
I think Graybeard changed his mind because he thinks that one day Tao might be a chosen one. I also think that Graybeard wants
Tao to live his dream. Graybeard is a kind man because he is teaching Tao.
I would like to be taught by Graybeard because he is a chosen one and he has a lot of experience

BOOK: The Adventures of Ulysses AUTHOR: Bernard Elvelsin
PAGE:3 QUOTE:" Hardships were called bad luck or the anger of the gods." EXPLANATION: So when Ulysses was attacked that was called the gods' anger. The gods might be angry because the crew or captain had disgraced them. When people would get attacked I would call it bad luck more than the gods' anger. It is because when gods are angery they would destroy things with lightning bolts and other special weapons.
DATE: 3/6/07 QUOTE:" It would be bad luck not to attack." EXPLANATION: There is a defenseless city there and Ulysses won't attack. I know he wants to get home ,but he could take the city for his country. He says that there is a fair wind blowing and that if the crew and
ship move on they could make it to the city of Ithica. Ithica is there home. This is a whole city we're talking about.

DATE: 4/2/07 BOOK: The Twits AUTHOR: Ronald Dahl
PAGE:9 QUOTE: "If a person has ugly thoughts it begins to show on their face." THOUGHTS: How can having ugly thoughts effect how you look? Well you could look mad or sad but, it won't make you look uglier and uglier. Maybe as you age you could get a little ugly.
DATE:4/3/07 PAGE:15 QUOTE:" By golly it is a giant skillywiggler." THOUGHTS: What is a giant skillywiggler? Is it another name for a frog? I think it might be because Mr. Twit lies to Mrs. Twit and tells her it is a skillywiggler instead of a frog.
DATE:4/4/07 PAGE:34 QUOTE:Mr. Twit is good at catching birds . On the day before Bird Pie day ... he would climb the branchesof a big dead tree and rub glue on it with a paintbrush.THOUGHTS:Why would a person do that? If you put glue on a branch and just take the birds stuck on there. That's pretty mean. You could just buy a frozen chicken at the market.
DATE:4/5/07 PAGE:54 QUOTE:Hurry up ,hurry up..... I want eveyone to paint sticky glue all over the ceiling.-Muggle Wumps:THOUGHTS:I think I know what the monkey is telling the birds to do. He triing to them to glue everything upside down. He is triing to do that because the Twits will walk in upside I think. I think that's what the animals are doing. It's still kind of weird.
DATE:4/6/07 PAGE:71 QUOTE:The floor is up there we're standing on the ceiling.......I've got it Iknow what we'll do. We'll stand on our heads , then anyway we'll be be the right way up. THOUGHTS:So thats what the Muggle Wumps did. They tricked them into thinking they were upside down. Then they were confused and turned themselves upside down thinking that they were now right side up. Those monkeys are pretty smart.
DATE:4/9/07PAGE:75 QUOTE:" I'm getting the dreaded shrinks!"-Mr.Twit THOUGHTS:I thought that the shrinks were something Mr.Twit had made up. The monkeys had just tricked them and now it is really happening. I wonder why the monkeys didn't get the shrinks when they were standing on their heads all day long. That's weird ,but somewhat sad at the same time. The Twits did get what the deserved.
BOOK: The Thief Lord AUTHOR: Cormelia Funke DATE:4/10/07
PAGE:7 QUOTE: For the time being, however, the city still stood on its wooden legs.THOUGHTS: What does the author mean by wooden legs? Does she mean that literally? Like real wooden legs are holding up Venice. Usually wooden can't hold up an entire city on top. Maybe if it was a small village then wood may be strong enough.
DATE:4/11/07 PAGE:16 QUOTE:" Now there's just the batteries for Mosca."-Prosper THOUGHTS: Who or what is Mosca? Mosca in spanish means a fly. Is it like a thing they nick-named and they use to get around? I think it is like something they use for transportation.(an electric scooter)Mosca could also be the name of a person.
DATE:4/12/07 PAGE:29 QUOTE:" No Carabiniere will ever arrest Riccio for stealing a few candles will he?"THOUGHTS: What is a carabiniere? Is he a police officer? It sort of sounds like it. Carabinieres also sound like church security guards. For some strange reason carabinieres sound like pirates. I don't know, but it really fits in to the pirate category.
DATE:4/13/07PAGE:36 QUOTE: ...well, if he offers less than two- hundred thousand lire.THOUGHTS: Is lire like something valuable?I bet it is like gold or smething. It sounds more like money. It is probably the Venitian word for money. Even so, lire doesn't sound Italian.
DATE:4/16/07PAGE:46 QUOTE: Madonna,no one has ever managed to get one lira more out of redbeard than he wanted to pay.THOUGHTS: What does madonna mean when Riccio says it? Does he mean it like he's calling Prosper a pre-madonna.Or, it could be Prosper's nickname for a reason.
DATE:4/17/07 PAGE:68 QUOTE:"The Conte likes to be mysterious .... THOUGHTS: What is the Conte. Is he like the count. He sounds like a very important man.His name also kind of sounds evil. Counts are usually evil that's why.
DATE:4/18/07 PAGE:77 QUOTE:Where are the confessionals?THOUGHTS:Who are the confessionals? Are they the people that direct them to the Count. The confessionals sound more like government people. Their names also sound very suspicious.(The Confessionals).
DATE:4/19/07 PAGE:83 QUOTE:Not that Esther Hartlieb could care less.THOUGHTS: Esther Harlieb is Prosper and Bo's aunt or something like that. How can Esther not care about them? She's suppose to take care of them. Unless Esther doesn't like them.
DATE:4/20/07 PAGE:100 QUOTE:Hornet... threw herself against him and lashed out at his sweater screaming at the top of her voice,"Let me go you pig! THOUGHTS:I know what Hornet is doing. She's drawing attention so Prosper and Bo can get away from Victor the detective. She is smart and I bet Prosper came up with the plan. I wonder how she ran away without attracting more attention.

MAY READING LOG BOOK: The Thief Lord
DATE: 5/1/07 PAGE:179 QUOTE:"The merry-go-round can turn you into an adult?" EXPLANATION:This story sounds like a legend or myth. I think the Conte stole the old merry-go-round because he is asking for the missing wing. Or the Conte may just want the wing for the merry-go-round so he could fix it.
DATE:5/2/07 PAGE:191 QUOTE:"Is what the Conte wanted so badly made out of gold?"-Barbarossa EXPLANATION: Why does Barbarosssa want to know about the Conte's buisness? I think he just wants to steal the lion's wing. Barbarossa just wants to sell it for himself.
DATE:5/3/07 PAGE:198 QUOTE:"Do you actually like children?"- Victor No, not really.-Mr. Hartieb, Prosper's uncle EXPLANATION: I don't like Mr. Hartieb. He sounds mean. How could you not like children? Maybe you not like a specific child for good reasons. Even so, you can't not like children just because some aren't well behaved.
DATE: 5/4/07 PAGE:218 QUOTE: "He lifted his head and saw the police boat....could this have something to do with the Conte?- Scipio/ The Thief Lord THOUGHTS: Scipio must be really scared. I mean ,you're the The Thief Lord and the police is right at your door. I think Scipio should sneek in through the window on the rear of the house or something so the police wouldn't say anything. I think the Conte might have called the police to get back at Scipio for following him. Maybe the police found the hideout and suspected that The Thief Lord was there.
DATE:5/7/07 PAGE:225 QUOTE:"Someone's taken you for a ride.. this money is not real.-Victor
THOUGHTS: That really sucks. Prosper, Scipio,Ida Spavento, Mosca, and Riccio had to get through all that trouble just to get tricked. They had to get the lion's wing for nothing. They were shot at.Plus, now they have got to get Bo and Hornet because of the Conte.
DATE:5/8/07 PAGE:231 QUOTE:"These children were in enough trouble already ...and you've made it even worse!"-Victor (telling Ida Spavento about the children) THOUGHTS: I don't think it was Ida's fault that they were in trouble. Besides, Prosper and Scipio made the deal with the Conte. I don't think Victor should be mad at Ida.
DATE:5/9/07 PAGE:236 QUOTE:"The sister with the loud voice poked her head into the room.. Caterina...Hornet jumped.
THOUGHTS: How does the sister kow Hornet's name? Hornet was sent to the orphanage by the police. I think that the two adults walking toward the orphanage were her parents. Now they have come back to get Hornet. I wonder why Caterina/Hornet ran away in the first place.
DATE:5/10/07 PAGE:245 QUOTE:" Hornet and Prosper set the table..THOUGHTS: I thought that Prosper didn't want to go with Riccio to Ida's house. Prosper was so sure on staying near the hotel to see if he could take Bo away from their relatives. I think that Riccio somehow convinced him to go. Maybe it was the thought of Hornet being so depressed because Prosper was not there.
DATE:5/11/07 PAGE:250 QUOTE: "What have you got to lose, now that Bo is gone.THOUGHTS: I think what Scipio just said is kind of disrespectful. I mean, that is Prosper's brother. How could you say something like that? Prosper still feels sad and Scipio is not helping. Prosper was just thinking on how to get Bo back.
DATE:5/14/07 PAGE:252 QUOTE:..There they were.. two huge white mastiffs." THOUGHTS:I thought the mastiffs only guarded the gates to the Isola Segreta only. This is really bad for Scipio and Prosper. Anyone who has come to the Conte's island has never lived again. Those mastiffs are pretty scary to Prosper and Scipio. I hope that they get out safe.
DATE:5/15/07 PAGE:260 QUOTE:"I don't even want to hear his name mentioned ever again.- Esther Harlieb THOUGHTS: I know that Bo was being mean to Esther and her husband. Still, Bo just wants to be with his brother. They were mean to Bo and Prosper too. They shouldn't deserve anything better than what they did to them.
DATE:5/16/07 PAGE:268 QUOTE:I would have left you here a while longer ,but my brother insists on seeing you.THOUGHTS:I think the girl that is keeping Scipio and Prosper prisoners is a coward and mean. If she hadn't of had those dogs she would be scared of them. Anyway, I think I know who her brother is. I think it's the Conte or maybe it is the Conte's son.
DATE:5/17/07 PAGE:274 QUOTE:"Morosina keeps spreading terrible stories about this island..." THOUGHTS:I knew that the island stories were fake as soon as Scipio and Prosper were imprisoned by the girl. What could a girl do to two boys on an island by herself at night. I almost believed it because of the vicious dogs though. That's a pretty smart thing to do. They don't have to worry about burgalars. Where is the Conte though?
DATE:5/18/07 PAGE:286 QUOTE:"He's broken it! ...-Renzo THOUGHTS: I that the Conte was collecting the pieces to the merry-go-round. How could the son know about the merry-go-round? He probably wasn't even born yet. Anyway,Barbarossa was visiting and he went on the merry-go-round. He went around to much and he broke it. Renzo must be very mad. All that hard looking.
DATE:5/21/07 PAGE:302 QUOTE:"..What about that little midget there?"-Victor THOUGHTS:That is funny. Barbarossa was called a midget. That was also kind of mean though. Barbarossa has been through a lot. He does kind of deserve it though. Barbarossa gave the idea of giving the group fake money.
DATE:5/22/07 PAGE:308 QUOTE:"They probably won't miss me..-Scipio You can't just leave your parents in the dark like that..-Victor
THOUGHTS:"How can Scipio do that? His parents have taken very good care of him. He can't stay with them all the time. Scipio's parents will be very sad. It's ok if he visits Ida and them, but Scipio should still live with his family.
DATE:5/23/07 PAGE:318 QUOTE:"Victor returned.. the next moring with a newspaper with Scipio's picture on it."THOUGHTS:Now Scipio will see what he has gotten himself into. He doesn't want come home and the police are looking for him. Maybe now he will come home. He may still want to hideout at Ida's.

The Shang Dynasty was one of the aearliest dynasties. It lasted from 1700 to about 1122? B.C.E. No one is really sure if the Shang dynasty ended at this time. The Shang ruled an area extending to Anyang. They were really involved in their religion. The Shang worshipped people and things just the same way as the Egyptians did. They sacrificed slaves so they could serve the king in the afterlife. During this time many slaves were killed. In these following paragraphs I will explain how religion was important to them.
Ancestor Worship
The Shang believed in worshiping their ancestors. They thought it was important to worship them. Shang also believed in the afterlife. Ancestors or the dead were believed to hurt or help one of the living. That is why the Shang believed that their ancestors should be attributed. People would leave food and wine in their tomb or grave. Sometimes people would be sacrificed. During this time slaves, soldiers, and animals were sacrificed.
The ancestors had n important role in the King’s life too. If the king was descended from a powerful ancestor he was crowned king. The ancestors were known to be wise. Therefore, they were asked for answers and advice. Maybe a Shang noble would ask,” will the king die?”
God Worship
Besides their ancestors, the Shang also worshipped their gods. Gods were based on the Earth’s natural elements. All the Shang gods were powerful, but the most powerful one was Shang ‘Ti. Every other god was considered lesser than him. He was believed to have controlled everything in the universe. Shang ‘Ti was worshipped like an ancestor. Animals were sacrificed to praise him. Humans were also sacrificed. The Shang believed that if Shang’Ti were unhappy that would mean disaster to the family.
He was also called upon to bring good blessing. Farmers would ask for rain to water the plants. Or someone would ask to heal a relative. Shang’Ti was a powerful god until the end of the dynasty. The Zhou took over around 1122 B.C.E. The Zhou adopted Shang’Ti as a god. Now, he was a lesser god to T’ien, the heaven god.
King and Religion
The king was important in religion too. Since he was descended from a” god” he was considered a divine being. He was treated as a god. When he died he was still a divine being. The king asked advice too. A craftsman would heat a bone over a fire and would read the cracks made by the fire. The advice was for where to build new cities, whether to go to war, or to build a new palace. It was the king’s responsibility to fufill the desires of his ancestors.
When the king died there would be more deaths. The Shang believed that all of his servnts and his slaves should die with him. They did this so all of the slaves and servants could serve him in the afterlife. Slaves and servants died by the hundreds. The kings men would kill the slaves or bury them alive with the dead king.
In conclusion the Shang had a voilent religion. During this time thousands of people were killed to honor one person! They must have been afraid of getting harmed by their ancestors. Not much evidence has been found about this civilazation. That's why some Chinese scholars stiil think it is a myth. Archaeologists have found oracle bones in tombs. They believe that it was from the Shang. Still scholars say that it must have been from other cities. In the future they hope to find more artifacts to learn more on this civilazation.
